Back in November, Huda Beauty released four mini palettes, the Obsessions Palettes, each featuring 9 shades.
The palettes were named Warm Obsessions, Smokey Obsessions, Electric Obsessions and Mauve Obsessions. The palettes are said to be the same formula as Huda Beauty's larger two palettes, Textured Shadows Palette - Rose Gold Edition and Desert Dusk Palette.
Warm Obsessions consists of warm browns and golds. Smokey Obsessions is a mix of taupe, silver and golds. Electric Obsessions an eclectic selection of bright, bold shimmers and mattes. Mauve Obsessions is a mix of mauve/pink tones.
The colours are lovely, bar the palest colour which doesn't really fit in. It's quite chalky and the shade isn't flattering but I suppose it could be used as a matte brow highlight.
I opted for Mauve Obsessions! I wasn't drawn to the other palettes as I have similar shades already. The Warm Obsessions is similar to the Urban Decay Naked 1 Palette and the Smokey Obsessions is similar to the Urban Decay Naked Smoky palette. The Electric Obsessions did not appeal to me - I wouldn't wear any of the colours in the palette. They're a little too "out there" for me!
The Mauve Obsessions palette, however, caught my eye. The shades I had seen swatched online looked different to all my other palettes. The most similar looking palette I could think of was my Urban Decay Naked 3 palette but the shades are cooler and more rose gold than the berry hues of the Mauve Obsessions palette (more on this below!).
There's been a lot of uproar with regards to the size of this palette in the beauty world, with a lot of bloggers, influencers and beauty consumers feeling the size of the palette does not warrant the £25 ($27 in the US) price tag.
I must admit, this initially put me off purchasing the palette. I was Googling different images and trying to work out the size of the palette compared to others in my collection! 😂 However, the palette isn't as small as I thought it would be but perhaps because I was worrying so much about it. You do get 9 decent sized pans for a "mini" palette. The shades are closer together than other small palettes in my collection but this doesn't particularly bother me.
I think it's important to state that I don't actually own the larger two palettes. They are super popular and were literally all over my Instagram with bloggers raving about them. I just couldn't justify spending £56 on a single eyeshadow palette. More so because I feel I wouldn't get much use out of the colours. I was um-ing and ah-ing over whether to get the ABH Modern Renaissance Palette or the Huda Beauty Textured Shadows Palette, and, for me, I knew I would get way more use out of the Modern Renaissance palette. The colours and textures were just more "wearable."
I liked the idea of a small, travel-friendly palette with mauve/pink tones as I have been really loving wearing pink eyeshadow lately and the 3 shimmer colours had me hooked! I quite liked the matte shades too as I'm trying to venture out of my comfort zone and wear more matte eyeshadow.
The palette is housed in thick cardboard packaging like Huda's previous, larger palettes. There's a little mirror on the inside which is always a bonus. There isn't much space between the different shades but I don't think that's really an issue.
The mattes aren't as pigmented as, say, my ABH palettes, but they still apply well and there's a good variety of colours to use as transition shades and outer-V shades. The shimmer colours are best applied with your finger and pressed on to the lid for maximum colour intensity. They can also be applied wet using a fixing spray on a clean brush.
I would say the word "mauve" is slightly misleading as the shades lean more berry-toned than mauve in my opinion. The two darker shimmer shades in particular are quite "pink" when applied. That said, I do still like this palette and it's brilliant if you're venturing in to the pink/rose gold eyeshadow trend.
It may just be me but it bothers me that the shades don't have names! It makes reviewing them harder and almost makes it feel a bit "lower end." Please tell me I'm not alone with this?!
Overall, a cute little palette that is travel-friendly and something a little different shade-wise.
I purchased mine from Cult Beauty - https://www.cultbeauty.co.uk/huda-beauty-mauve-obsessions-palette.html
Did you buy any of the Huda Beauty Obsessions palettes?
