I just love Insta Story polls! I asked if my next blog post should be my favourite red lipsticks or favourite pink lipsticks. Red won by a small margin! Those who voted for pinks - I have more blog posts in the pipeline for my favourite pink and nude lipsticks so stay tuned.
I used to love wearing a red lip on a night out. A winged liner and red lip was always a staple "out out" look for me. Over the years, my make up has changed and I don't often reach for red lipsticks anymore. I don't feel I necessarily need a bright lip to make a statement, however, every time I wear a red lipstick I'm reminded of how glam and polished it makes me feel!
It's actually crazy that as someone who has always had a love for red lipstick, I don't actually own as many as I thought. I am definitely more of a pink girl when it comes to lipstick but sometimes there is nothing quite like a red lipstick for a bold pop of colour.
My red lipsticks range from blood red shades to more orange-toned reds and matte finishes to satin. I prefer my red lipstick to be matte so all but one of these lipsticks are a matte finish (oops!) but I am always open to trying different formulas and shades of red.
So in no particular order, here are my favourite 5 red lipsticks...
MAC Retro Matte Lipstick in Ruby Woo
A cult MAC lipstick. No girl's make up collection is complete without this colour. It is widely known as being the perfect red lipstick for all skin tones. It has just the right amount of blue and red tones for a true red lip. The retro matte finish ensures it is super long-lasting, however, the down side being that it does feel dry on the lips. Exfoliating and moisturising lips before wearing this is a must. I love MAC Lip Scrubtious to quickly exfoliate the lips before applying a lip balm to ensure even and smooth application.Sephora Cream Lip Stain in 01 Always Red
I picked this up when I was in LA in 2016 and I am so glad I did. This is very similar to MAC's Ruby Woo but really long lasting as it is a liquid lipstick. I won't go in to too much regarding the Sephora Cream Lip Stains (I will be doing a separate liquid lipstick post) but I will say they are A-MAZING! This is a true, blood red that will suit any skin tone and stays put all day.
I love this shade of red. It has a slight hint of pink which I love as it makes it more wearable. It is such a vibrant red and the satin finish also means it is comfortable on the lips. I would say it wears well but does need topping up if you have had something to eat. I think this would suit all skin tones!Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick by Kate in 24
Nars Pure Matte Lipstick in Vesuvio
A deeper red, this is different to the other reds in my collection but I love it. It's a slightly darker shade of red than MAC's Ruby Woo and I looks great for autumn/winter. I love pairing this with a simple eye (winged liner or just mascara) for a polished, clean look. I would say it is more of a matte/satin finish but is really comfortable to wear and does not make my lips feel dry. A long lasting and gorgeous shade of red.
Mac Matte Lipstick in Lady Danger
Not your typical red! I love this lipstick for the summer months as it is a bright orange-red that looks awesome with a tan. Still red enough for a polished look but also a different take on a red lip. A comfortable matte that is long-lasting and would suit light/medium skin tones best.
